Illicit liquor kills 14 in Jharkhand’s Giridih

llicit liquor has killed 14 people in Jharkhand’s Giridih district. A few other people who were in a serious condition have been referred to Rims Hospital. The hooch tragedy took place in Saria area of Deori block.

Giridih DC Rahul Kumar has ordered a probe in the matter. The health department team has also reached the village and is collecting blood samples.

A pall of gloom recedes in both the blocks and the villages where people have died after consuming illicitly distilled spurious country made liquor.

Meanwhile, opposition hit out the government over the issue and placed them in dock.

JVM chief Babulal Marandi in his last press conference before the party merges with the BJP alleged that the onus of deaths of the 14 people is on the Hemant Soren government. Sheer negligence in dereliction of duty by the concerned has led to this incident, he said.

Babulal Marandi claimed that special branch had the input that illegal alcohol trade is on under the nose of the administration. The former chief minister questioned why the administration turned a blind eye towards the thriving illegal liquor trade.

Rural development and parliamentary affairs minister Alamgir Alam said that a massive awareness campaign will be launched to educate people about the bad effects of illegal liquor. Banning liquor would not serve the purpose, he said. Bihar did it but a home delivery service has started there and liquor trade is on though clandestinely, he added.
