World Whisky Day is here! 2

World Whisky Day was founded in 2012 and falls on the third Saturday of May each year.

World Whisky Day was founded in 2012 by Blair Bowman while studying at the University of Aberdeen.

It is now owned by White Light Media, Edinburgh and in 2017 it employed two official whisky ambassadors – Aly Mathers and Joe Kent – who were the judge of the competition where all things related to whisky were held in the run up to #WorldWhiskyDay on 16th May. They can be seen in videos, present talks and host tastings, sharing their passion for whisky across the globe.

What is World Whisky Day?

World Whisky Day invites everyone to try a dram and celebrate the water of life. Taking place annually on the third Saturday in May, this special occasion is celebrated by whisky lovers worldwide with tastings, events and gatherings.

Sadly things are different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic but don’t worry as Blair Bowman the founder of this day has a message for us all :

Sadly, it may be a while until we can celebrate our favourite tipple in person. But that doesn’t mean we can’t come together virtually for some socially distanced dramming.

World Whisky Day 2020 may be different to all which have come before it but the guiding principles remain the same. World Whisky Day is about making whisky fun for all, not about being exclusive or prescriptive. All you need to participate is a bottle of whisky/whiskey – whatever variety, however you enjoy it.

The only rule is to drink responsibly!

Blair Bowman
Founder

How to take part in it?

Anyone can take part in the World Whisky Day 2020 and there are various ways to do so.

First of all, you can join the conversation on social media using #WorldWhiskyDay. What kind of whisky are you sampling? Who are you sharing it with this year? How do you enjoy your whisky – on the rocks, with water, or with a mixer? The possibilities are endless.

You can also join World Whisky Day founder Blair Bowman and his whisky-loving friends Chris White, Joseph Trotter and Matthew Cordiner for a ‘lockdown’ version of their famous Big Fat Whisky Quiz, taking place at 12:30am on World Whisky Day. Gather your virtual team (max 5) of people who know-it-all about whisky and register here for this riot of whisky trivia in aid of The Drinks Trust. All participants (and anyone that fancies learning a thing or two about whisky) can tune into the livestream on the World Whisky Day Facebook page.

Wherever you are in the world right now, there’s likely to be a World Whisky Day event that’s right for you. Regularly check social media for competitions, quizzes, tastings, livestreams and some good Old Fashioned chat (pun intended).
